Our Story

Built from the
inside out.

FinBeauty is a financial and business education platform for beauty professionals, founded by Craig Cowan — a licensed cosmetologist, cosmetology instructor, and fourth-generation beauty industry professional based in Tennessee. Craig traveled nationally as an artistic educator for Paul Mitchell and spent years consulting with salon owners and stylists before building FinBeauty to provide the financial education the industry has always needed.

Some people find their way to an industry. Craig Cowan was born into one.

Fourth generation in the Professional Beauty Industry, Craig grew up watching his father build a distribution company — surrounded by hairdressers, salon owners, and the quiet complexity of a business world that most people never see from the other side of the chair. The beauty industry wasn't just work in his family. It was identity.

His parents built their life's work around a simple belief: that the hairdresser matters. That the craft deserves to be treated as a profession, not just a trade. That passion for the work, without the knowledge to sustain a career, isn't enough.

Craig absorbed that belief growing up. When the family became partners in opening a cosmetology school, he didn't just watch from the sidelines — he enrolled. He earned his cosmetology license. Then, not long after graduating and working in the salon, he went back and earned his instructor's license too.

He didn't just earn the licenses and move on. Craig worked behind the chair. He went on to travel with Paul Mitchell as an artistic educator — serving as assistant to Angus Mitchell — taking the stage at trade shows across the country, standing in front of rooms full of hairdressers, and understanding firsthand what it means to build a career in this industry from the inside out.

That experience changed something. Standing on both sides of the curriculum — as a learner, a working stylist, an educator on the trade show floor — Craig saw how much passion existed in the room, and how naturally the conversation kept returning to the same questions: how does this actually work financially? What does it really mean to go booth rent? How do taxes work when you're behind the chair?

Later, working on the distribution side of the family business, Craig spent years consulting with salons and hairdressers across the industry — commission owners, booth renters, independent operators, stylists at every stage of their career. One conversation stayed with him. A stylist — talented, established, years into her career — said simply: “I wish I had understood taxes while I was still in school. How they'd actually affect me behind the chair.” It wasn't a complaint. It was just honest. And it reflected something Craig had heard, in different words, more times than he could count.

That conversation became a conviction: the earlier a beauty professional builds their financial foundation, the stronger and more durable their career becomes. The craft is too demanding, the career too important, to leave that foundation to chance.

FinBeauty was built on that conviction — and built to be accessible to every professional at every stage of their career. The belief is straightforward: if the financial and business foundation is laid early, professionals enter their careers ready to make smarter decisions from day one. That's what drives every lesson and every tool on the platform.

The aspiration is simple, even if the work isn't: more hairdressers building lasting, thriving careers. Not just surviving in the industry they love — but truly thriving in it.
